Thanks to technology today, we’re able to build a version of the internet we actually want, instead of what a bunch of guys in San Fransisco told us we wanted. Thinking about web3 this way opens up a world of opportunity that we just did not have with the web’s earlier versions, which is what makes this all worth learning today. The best part? 4 Terms to Know: dao rhymes with bao (like the bun)

  • De-fi - Shorthand for ‘Decentralized Finance’. The original movement within crypto that removes the control that banks and institutions have on money, financial products, and financial services. It eliminates the fees that banks and other financial companies charge for using their services. So you can trade financial products or money using a global currency, not currency exchange rates or typical big banks.

  • DAO - Decentralized Autonomous Organization. The structure for a company or organization in web3. In a DAO, everyone can have ownership and be involved in decision-making. They are community-driven decisions verses a centralized leadership.

  • Wallet - A place to store your cryptocurrency holdings, like your bitcoin, Ethereum or an NFT. Many exchanges offer digital wallets. Wallets may be hot (online, software-based) or cold (offline, usually on a device).

  • Gas - fee charged for performing operations on the Ethereum network. i.e. like a commission or fee for transactions.
